The following takes place in the first years of this century, before the end of the reign of Abdul Hamid and the advent of the New Turks in 1908, when the modernizing of Turkey- completed by Ataturk- began. The quaint old Turkish customs here depicted, the harem atmosphere and the Turkish types are all true to life. (I lived for two years in Turkey and saw the passing away of the Old Régime.)
